    What is Invisalign Teen®?

Invisalign® straightens teeth using a series of clear plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. In order for teeth to move into the right position, gentle pressure needs to be applied over time. Traditional braces do this using wires attached to brackets. Invisalign® works differently by using clear aligners that place pressure on specific teeth little by little until they shift into alignment.

Here are six things you should know about Invisalign® prior to visiting our office.

    1. Teens love Invisalign®. A lot of teens prefer Invisalign® because the aligners are clear and much less noticeable than braces. When teens feel comfortable with the way their orthodontic treatment looks, they are often more willing to stick with the process and wear the aligners the way they are supposed to. Like braces, Invisalign® still requires commitment. The aligners need to be worn most of the day in order to work correctly. However, teens can remove them while eating, brushing their teeth, playing sports, or taking pictures, which makes everyday life feel a little easier during treatment.
    2. Easier to use. One of the biggest reasons families choose Invisalign Teen® is that the aligners are simple to use. They work similarly to removable retainers, so teens can take them out whenever necessary and put them back in afterward. Since the aligners come out during meals, there are usually no food restrictions like there are with braces. Teens can continue eating the foods they normally enjoy without worrying about damaging brackets or getting food stuck in wires. Brushing and flossing are easier too because there are no metal pieces blocking the teeth during cleaning.
    3. Teeth stay cleaner. Keeping teeth clean with braces can sometimes be difficult because food and plaque easily collect around brackets and wires. If those areas are not cleaned properly every day, it can increase the risk of staining or cavities during treatment. With Invisalign Teen®, the aligners are removed before eating and brushing, so oral hygiene stays much more normal. Teens can brush and floss the same way they usually would without needing special tools or spending extra time cleaning around braces. Many parents like that Invisalign® makes it easier for teens to maintain healthier teeth throughout treatment.
    4. Better for self-esteem. Even though braces are common, many teens still feel self-conscious about wearing them. Some worry about standing out at school or simply do not like the look of metal braces during pictures and everyday conversations. At Alamo Family Dentistry, we understand that concern. Invisalign Teen® offers a more discreet option because the aligners are clear and difficult for most people to notice. Teens can continue smiling normally throughout treatment without feeling like their braces are the first thing people see. As their teeth gradually improve, many teens also feel more confident about their smile during the process.
    5. Treatment time. Treatment time depends on the patient and how often the aligners are worn properly. In many cases, teens wear Invisalign Teen® for around eighteen months, though some cases may take more or less time. Since the aligners are removable, they need to be worn consistently in order for treatment to stay on track. Leaving them out too long during the day can slow progress and extend treatment time. Wearing Invisalign Teen® takes responsibility, but many teens find the process easier than traditional braces.
    6. Invisalign Teen® is more comfortable. Whenever teeth are moving, some soreness is normal. Teens may notice slight pressure when switching to a new aligner tray, just like patients with braces feel soreness after adjustments. The difference is usually in day-to-day comfort. Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires that can rub against the inside of the cheeks and lips, sometimes causing irritation or small sores. Since Invisalign Teen® aligners are made from smooth plastic, they tend to feel more comfortable overall and are less likely to irritate the inside of the mouth during treatment.
